Drink Driving Conviction Could Cost Roofer His Business

Jan 7, 2022

A Carlisle roofer has appeared before magistrates charged with drink driving, and his ban will have a dramatic effect on his livelihood.

Police stopped the 39-year-old on December 11 after tailing his Ford Transit. They witnessed it straddle a centre white road line and then brake quite a distance from a roundabout as it approached.

On stopping and questioning the driver, he told police “I’ve had a few.”

Testing following his arrest found the man to have 77mcg alcohol per 100ml breath. The legal limit for drink driving is 35mcg, putting him at just over twice the limit.

Mitigating, Chris Toms told the court that the mandatory loss of his licence – which is essential for his business – would have a dramatic effect on his client’s job and family life.

The defendant, who has four children, also works with and sponsors a local children’s football team.

After hearing submissions and a guilty plea to drink driving, magistrates banned him from driving for 19 months, which may be reduced on completion of the drink drivers’ rehabilitation course. He must also pay a fine of £357 plus costs and a victim surcharge.
