A man from Northern Ireland who crashed his girlfriend’s car while drink driving following an argument with her, has been banned from driving for 12 months.
The prosecution told the court that police receive a report of a collision on September 30, 2020. On attending the scene, officers found a Mercedes on its side having sustained significant damage, but the driver was not present.
Police found the defendant a short distance away with blood on his face and smelling of alcohol. He failed a roadside breath test and was arrested. An evidential sample gave a reading of 197mg alcohol per 100ml blood. The legal limit is 80mg.
A swab of blood taken at the scene of the accident confirmed that it was the defendant who had been driving at the time.
Defending, Gerard Trainor said: “This is a man with a clear record and of good character. He had a row with his girlfriend and all of these charges arise from this one stupid mistake.
“I can tell from his presentation today that he will not be before the court again.”
On hearing the man plead guilty to drink driving, Deputy District Judge Anne Marshall remarked that it would be a “very expensive lesson” as she banned him from driving for 12 months. She also ordered him to pay a £500 fine and the offender’s levy of £15.
The man’s ban will be reduced to nine months on completion of the drink driving rehabilitation course.
