A man has appeared at Nottingham Magistrates court after he caused £20,000 of damage to his car and a wall while drink driving.
The 60-year-old had drunk three-quarters of a bottle of gin, with tonic, and got in his car to get more from the shop down the road. On his return, he dropped the phone he was using to access the gated community in which he lives and as he reached down to pick it up, rolled his car forward, causing the damage.
Prosecuting, Daniel Pietryka told the court that the incident occurred on January 20 at 8.35pm. “It involved the police being sent out,” he said. “They mentioned about slurred and broken speech”, he continued, adding “He mentioned he had been drinking due to a bereavement.”
Mitigating, his lawyer said his client had no previous convictions of this nature and had not been in trouble for eight years.
“Regarding the incident, the defendant had very upsetting news that day,” added his lawyer. “Unfortunately, not one bereavement but two. One friend died in a Quad bike accident. Another friend had taken his own life. So he was in very upsetting personal circumstances.
“He drank the gin and tonic, you have heard. He took a short journey to the shop and back.
“The gate at the front of the gated community has a facility to be opened with a phone code to the gate. Unfortunately, he dropped his phone whilst doing that, and whilst trying to pick up the phone the vehicle rolled forward and hit the gate. The defendant wasn’t injured.
“He has spent money on repairs to the wall and £20,000 to have his own vehicle repaired”.
After pleading guilty to drink driving, magistrates fined him £769 and banned him from driving for 25 months. He must also pay £85 costs and a £76 victim surcharge. His ban may be reduced on completion of the drink driving rehabilitation course.
