Ban For Birmingham City Groundsman Caught Three Times Drink Driving Limit

Jan 26, 2021

A 26-year-old groundsman for Birmingham City FC has been banned from the roads after he was found to be more than three times the legal drink driving limit.

The man was hospitalised following a collision on a motorway in Leicestershire just after 5pm on April 3, 2020. Blood samples revealed he had 274mg alcohol per 100ml blood. The legal limit is 80mg.

Leicester Magistrates court heard that the man had appeared in another court for a similar offence in 2014.

Prosecuting, Rober Carr said: “Police officers were called to the M69 near Burbage to a two-vehicle collision.

“The vehicles were in the carriageway and debris had been thrown across the opposing carriageway, such was the impact.

“One driver was being treated in an ambulance. That was Mr Hayward.

“He gave his details and an officer suspected he was intoxicated. There was a strong smell on his breath and he was slurring his speech.

“He failed a roadside breath test and was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary by ambulance.”

The court didn’t receive any details about the occupants of the second vehicle.

Representing the defendant, Hinesh Bhayani told the court: “He tells me he has been sober for the past 10 months and was suffering mental health issues at the time of the offence.”

The defendant is now receiving medication for his mental health issues. After pleading guilty to drink driving magistrates banned him from driving for 40 months and ordered him to carry out 200 hours of unpaid community work.

He must also pay £85 costs and a £90 victim surcharge.
