A security guard who jumped a red light and crashed into another car while drink driving has been banned from the roads for a year and lost his job as a result.
Prosecuting, procurator fiscal depute Flora Napier told Paisley Sheriff Court:
“At around 12.35pm the accused was in his work’s vehicle travelling in the direction of Bridge Street, Paisley.
“He approached the traffic lights, which were red, and stopped.
“At that point, the witness was in his vehicle travelling in the opposite direction and he also had to stop at the traffic lights.
“When the light turned green, the witness had right of way.
“The accused drove directly into his path, causing significant damage to both vehicles.
“Police attended and the accused said, ‘It is me you are after’.”
The defendant failed a roadside breath test and was arrested. Later analysis found him to have 36mcg alcohol per 100ml breath. The legal drink driving limit in Scotland is 22mcg.
The man’s lawyer said in defence that his client admitted to “having a few drinks the night before” and believed he was “fit to drive” on the afternoon of the accident.
He said: “Clearly, he wasn’t fit to drive and he fully accepts responsibility for making the foolish decision to drive the work’s vehicle that day.
“He worked as a security guard for Orbis Security and requires his driving licence for that job.
“However, he has told his employer, who has said he would not be able to remain in that job he has held since 2007.”
After hearing the man plead guilty to drink driving, Sheriff Seith Ireland banned him from driving for one year and imposed a fine of £400.
