Drink Driving Figures “Still Too High”

Jul 8, 2017

Although there have been fewer arrests for drink and drug driving during this summer’s campaign, police state that the figure is “still too high”.

In the campaign run by Essex Police a total of 107 people were arrested, 90 less than last year’s, which ran along the same timescale. This year’s campaign took in the whole of June, while last year’s ran from June 10 to July 10.

Latest figures show that 75 were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, while 32 more were arrested for driving under the influence of drugs.

Casualty Reduction Manager Adam Pipe said “We are obviously concerned this figure is still so high.

“In 2017, I find it galling that so many people still find it acceptable to get behind the wheel of a car under the influence of drink or drugs.

“More than eight percent of crashes on Essex’s roads last month involved someone who tested positive for drink or drug driving or who refused a test.”

Nicola Foster, chairman of the Safer Essex Roads Partnership, said: “The results of this campaign show drink and drug driving is still an issue on Essex’s roads which is a concern.

“We urge the public not to drink or drug drive or be a passenger to a drink or drug driver.”
