30-year-old barmaid Louise Cooper was banned from driving for three years after crashing her car while over twice the drink-drive limit and then abandoning it.
She had been drinking with a friend in the early hours of the morning before she crashed her Renault Megane in Brightlingsea. She panicked and went to bed instead of reporting the incident, which is where officers found her asleep the next morning having traced her vehicle. The breathalyser test showed her to have 88 microgrammes of alcohol per 100ml breath in her system. The legal limit is 35mcg.
Cooper had been working in a bar until around 3am on May 29, but following a phone call from a friend who needed a lift she went to help, leaving her sister to mind her three children. Upon meeting her friend they each drank two large glasses of vodka.
She admitted drink-driving and leaving the scene of an accident before the Magistrates Court in Colchester.
Selina Dines, mitigating said “She gave her mate a lift.
“She had a couple of drinks because she had been having some difficulties in her long-term relationship with her partner which she was struggling with.
“She panicked and when she got home her sister told her to deal with it in the morning.
“She realises that was wrong and she had a duty to report the accident as soon as it was practical.”
Cooper had a previous conviction for failing to provide a breath specimen in 2010, leaving Magistrates no choice but to ban her from driving for three years. She also received a £200 fine and was ordered to pay £85 costs. She also had to pay a £30 victim surcharge.
