A drink driver who caused a head-on crash and “ruined” a couple’s lives has been jailed for three years.
The 44-year-old drink driver, Jerry Bouma had already admitted to causing serious injury by dangerous driving and drink driving, before he faced sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court.
The incident occurred then Bouma, who was driving a can, overtook a slower moving vehicle on a single carriageway, immediately thereafter ploughing head-on into a Nishan Qashqai vehicle coming the other way.
Both the passengers of the Nissan suffered serious injuries with a retired man, Mr Haram, being described as having “broke[n} many if not most of the bones in his body.”
The court also heard that Mr Haram underwent surgery and his injuries were described as life changing. Mrs Haram told the police: “The driver has completely ruined Terry’s life and our lives.”
Bouma was said to have drunk both wine and vodka the night before the collision and also had a conviction for drink driving in his native country of the Netherlands.
Along with the three-year prison sentence, Bouma was disqualified from driving for four years.
