Manchester City midfielder, Yaya Toure, who apparently earns some £200,000 per week, has not only been convicted of drink-driving and receiving an 18-month ban, he has also been handed down the biggest fine in England and Wales for the offence at £54,000.
Appearing at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court, Toure admitted the offence of drink-driving from 28 November 2016, when he gave a reading of 75 micrograms of alcohol in 100 ml of breath. The current legal limit for drink driving in England and Wales is 35 micrograms.
Toure, who is a devout Muslim, told the court that he does not drink alcohol and did not know he had consumed any. He further told the court that he had been taking drinks from what he thought was a jug of plain coca cola and had no idea that it also contained brandy. He had been the designated driver for the night.
He also told the court that the drink did not taste normal and he felt tired as he left the party.
In summing up, the Judge accepted that Toure had drunk the alcohol unintentionally but found it “inconceivable” that he was unaware that he had been drinking.
The Judge stated: “It appears to me that whilst you may not have knowingly consumed alcohol it should have been clear to you that you were in fact drinking alcohol at some point before you took the decision to drive.”
Toure was also told that had he not pleaded guilty, the fine imposed would more likely have been some £81,000.
