It has been reported that the Department for Transport is considering launching a fine system for motorists who park on pavements.
The thought behind the new fine is to encourage people to walk by removing potential obstructions on pavements.
It has been reported in The Times that in a recent cycling and walking investment strategy, minsters for the Department of Transport plan to extend a 40 year old London by-law right across England.
The move is expected to make it illegal to park on pavements unless local councils allow motorists permission to mount the kerb.
Currently in London, these exemptions are shown by bay markings or blue parking signs. In other parts of the country parking on the pavement is generally allowed subject to other restrictions or double yellow lines.
In February 2016, Leicester Council received so many complaints about pavement parking that they plan to use a marked bay system as in London. Those who ignore the bays and flout the law are likely to receive a £70 fine.
Road safety campaigners have been quick to welcome the plane however, motoring organisations have suggested that alternative parking solutions must be put in place.
“The concern would be that local authorities will be able to ban pavement parking without looking at the consequences,” Edmund King, president of the AA, told The Times.
“Getting rid of pavement parking is fine but only if you then remove some redundant double-yellow lines to create space elsewhere,” he added.
Councils have been able to ban pavement parking since 2011 by using special regulation orders. These new regulations would make a blanket ban across the country and councils having to mark where there are exceptions.
